Boston Terrier Puppy Not Eating

by Kim
(Royal Oak, MI)

My husband and I just brought home a 9 week old Boston on Friday 5/23. We are feeding her Eukanuba food for puppies small breed, just as our breeder was, but she's not eating very well. She's supposed to eat about a cup of food daily and I'm lucky to get 1/2 cup in. Should I be concerned? She has good energy and is peeing and pooping regularly. I've even added water to the food.

Eilish runs and hides when I get her food ready. Blood tests reveal no health problem. She is losing weight and is shivery! What is the problem/solution? Help!

Not Uncommon

Bostons are kind of a sensitive breed.

A temporary hunger strike is not uncommon for a a new member of your family. Some BT's will display this behavior because they are evaluating their place in the pack.

Don't fret within 2-3 days they will realize that they are part of your family pack and this a great opportunity to build a subordinate position for your pup's training.

They are looking to you to set boundaries for their pack position.

Being subordinate does not mean that you don't love and care for them. They thrive on structure and will be willing to respect your home's boundaries and rules.

These boundaries may include barking cessation, outside elimination, no nipping, biting or chewing and positive reinforcement to positive behavior.

Sincerely, Holly
