Boston Terrier Losing Weight

by williamsfam

My Boston is a yr old, very active most of the time. But he won't gain any weight. It seems he's losing weight the past couple of wks. He also constantly has worms! The vet says he's fine. He is the only dog we have, is that normal for a Boston? But the other pups from his litter are twice his size! Should I trust my vet or find another?

See a different Vet
by: Boston Lover

Worms are not normal for Boston's or any dog to have for a long period of time. They are born with them, then you deworm them. Worms are very bad - please see a different vet. There are also worming meds you can get over the counter but I would have him seen if this has been going on awhile. Also, I know it sounds gross but you can also take a stool sample to the new vet if you can see worms in his poop. It would help them to figure out what's going on. Hope this helps.

Second Thoughts
by: Mary

It is never a bad idea to get a second opinion.

We had a vet that said our pups had one kind of worm or another EVERY TIME we went in (like every 3 months). We switched vets and they have not had worms at all in the past 2 years!!!

Some vets prefer more medication and some prefer a less aggressive approach. It's important to pick one that agrees with YOUR ideas and approaches.

As far as losing weight...we have one girl that is more hyper than the other and she needs twice the food to keep up her weight. However, if she is 1/2 the size of her littermates I would keep looking into it.
