Boston Terrier Licking & Biting

by Ed
(Ontario, Canada)

Hi, I have a 12 week old boston terrier which has a habit of jumping at faces and biting hair, ears, and face. I have established that im the alpha male and he doesn't do it to me, but he does do it to my wife and kid and are friends. We have toys for him and he gets along with are other dog, a yorkie poo. I try disciplining him and he's fine with me, it's just he does it to others. Any suggestions?

Licking

I have a Boston that is almost 8 months old - he licks constantly. Our feet, legs, arms, faces... anything he can reach - although i dont mind it too much, i am always trying not to encourage the behaviour because our friends and family really dont like it because its so constant! Our boston has become known as " licker" instead of being known by his name and before he even gets close people tell him "dont lick me wero !". I have heard that its a common boston trait - who knows if he will one day relax a little - i am just glad that he shows me so much attention... its good to know that a dog is content!

Part of a Boston Puppy

You're going in the right direction, and the above comment is 100% correct, but I would also like to add that this is a common Boston trait.

Play for a Boston is very much about using their mouth and front feet, and they are a very "in your face" type of breed. You just have to teach them when it's not wanted, and to limit the pressure of their bites.

Just keep in mind they will probably always play this way when you get them excited, but they will learn to keep the "mouthing" to just touches and not biting down.

I wouldn't be too concerned though, as both of our Boston's were very bitey as puppies, and it has translated into a playful mouthiness (not biting), that you can command to stop when you want.

They're very intelligent and eager to please, which makes them very easy to train. I was worried about this behavior with our first Boston as well, but as they grow into an adult, and those bites turn into controlled, playful touches, it becomes a great part of the Boston personality.

You have taken the first step by becoming the Alpha leader. You need to interfere when he jumps on others. Have him sit by you when they come over and he must learn the "stay" command. Sounds like you have it under control but keep working at it.
