Boston Terrier Head Shape

by Jen
(Delaware)

I have decided that the BT is the one for me. I have one question though. I have seen that some BT's have rather large heads and kinda look like pit bulls. Are these just inferior genes? I want a BT that has the small apple head. How do I make sure that I get that kind of dog?

We own a "pit bull head" Bostie. He is a beautiful and intelligent dog. He weighs a bit over 25 pounds which makes him larger than average. I believe that this type should be bred more than it currently is.

Our Boston Terrier has a beautiful head that looks a bit like a Pit Bull's; i.e., it is square with a muzzle longer than many Bosties I have seen. He is large, exceptionally intelligent and cooperative. I think someone should start a special line of Boston Terriers like him.

The skull is square, flat on top, free from wrinkles, cheeks flat, brow abrupt and the stop well defined.

So really their head should be boxy. There are a lot of "round or dome headed" bostons out there.

Boston Terrier should have heads shaped like a baseball. That is the best measure to go by...Odlly I am from Delaware too but I got my female Boston form PA and my male from MD. They both have baseball shaped heads.

Boston heads have changed a little over the years since their founding. When the Boston breed was first begun they were known as "Roundhead Bull Terriers". Present day Boston Terriers have very square heads. Well bred Boston Terriers with consistent breed standard type are all a set of squares. Yes, there are incosistently bred Boston Terriers that posess more of a "Pit Bull type head". This is not to say that Bostons with heads like these do not make wonderful pets, just are not show quality, do not fit the standard, and should not be bred from. As far as a Boston having a small apple head, I am not sure what you mean by that. I know of apple head Chis, but there is no such thing as an apple head Boston.
