Boston Terrier Hacking & Coughing

My male Boston Terrier has been hacking and coughing since Memorial Day. I took him to my vet and he said he may have an allergy and gave me temeril-p pills, but he is no better than before. The cough is deep hacking and VERY persistent 24/7. What is going on with him? He is like my son PLEASE help me get answers!

Additional comments about allergies
by: Janice

I just wanted to add that Temaril P is what our vet presribles too but don't expect it to work instantly as your Boston will continue to be exposed to grass and pollen each time he goes potty outside. It can be rather chronic during the spring and summer months. Temaril P is a type of steriod that treats inflamation so your vet probably won't want your pup to be on it for an extended period of time. Our vet suggested to us to give our dogs childrens Bendryl whenener they have problems and it has worked great but don't try it withough talking to your vet. Just remember that people with allergies hack and cough too, even when taking allergy medication. Good luck! ;o)

Could be allergies
by: Janice

You mentioned that it began around Memorial Day which is a time when grass and pollen counts are beginning to get high. The more common cause of hacking and coughing is allergies which are very common in Bostons. Paw licking is another sign. Our Bostons both have had problems with allergies and the vet was able to treat it easily with simple meds. You should visit the vet to be sure. :)

Don't delay
by: Linda Galway/TurnerME

Coughing can sometimes be a symptom of heart disease in dogs. Don't delay. Get your dog back in to see the vet, and if you are not happy with the result, find another vet.
