Boston Terrier Ear has black/brown stuff with blood and scabs

After my BT's bath one day I was wiping his ears out and it appeared to be completely clogged with a brown black waxy substance. He loves being outside and is always rolling around in dirt and also rubs the side of his head in dirt. Thinking it was just built up dirt or debris I started using a ear cleaner for dogs ears. Had been doing this for about a week every other day and then saw some dried blood and what appear to be scabs mixed in with the waxy substance. I kept putting in drops and wiping ears out and have his ear fairly clear now. But each time I put drops in it seems to loosen up even more that must be deep in his ear.
He hardly ever scratches his ear and it doesn't seems to be very sensivtive. Called a vet's office for advice because having been laid off for 1 1/2 years now i just cannot afford a visit. Was told to try mix of 1 part vinegar and 1 part water in case it was ear mites. Any ideas?
