Boston Terrier Ear Cropping & Natural vs. C-Section Birth

Do Boston Terrier's need their ears cropped or do they stand up naturally?

I am will soon start breeding my AKC registered Boston Terriers but before I start planning for her next cycle I was wondering if Boston's need their ears cropped or if they stand up on their own naturally. Does anyone have any feedback from their personal experience? Also is it common that they have natural birth or does it generally require c-section?

I agree with "Anonymous" about leaving the breeding to professionals who have done a lot of research, know what the pitfalls are, and have made the decision to do everything necessary to ensure quality puppies (i.e., puppies who do not have genetic faults, health problems and temperament issues). Many people go into this thinking it's a quick way to make money; in fact, you will spend a LOT of money on your pups if you do it right, and that's the only way it should be done. Every breeding should be done with an eye toward improving the breed, not just make more BTs. There is a lot to think about before you take this step. If you are determined to breed your BT, please have her evaluated by a professional breeder (You should be able to find their names or connect with them at dog shows.)so you know what her "faults" are. (Very few dogs, even show dogs, are perfect.) If you can spend time with a local breeder with a good reputation, you will learn what you need to know to make a good decision about whether or not to breed your BT.

I didn't say I was breeding her in the next 5 minutes. That is why I am doing all of the research now. If you never ask the questions how can you possibly know the answers and ensure that you are prepared to be a "professional". My dog is like one of my children and definitely has a good home as I would ensure any of her puppies in the future would as well. I know that there are a lot of bad pet owner's out there and I would do everything I possibly could to prevent any animal from ending up with one of them.

I once considered breeding before I got to know other true bt lovers, too if you have to ask those questions; don't. Do it. Leave it to the true professionals who know all about the breed. . I will give you the advice they ALL gave me. There are too many puppies and adult boston terriers being abused that need good homes fiirst. My first love came from a puppy mill and my second came from an abused home after only 5 mo. Old. My vet won't except pets that aren't spayed or nuetered. And, she's the best. Enough said for me.

cropping

I've had 3 Bostons; my first had unpredictable ears, mostly up, but sometimes a little curl here or there would happen; my second has perfectly upright, not pointed, ears and they're "beautiful" in BT terms; my rescue has pointy ears that curl back slightly, I think because she was so stressed as a baby. No proof of that, though.

Personally, I would NEVER crop a BTs ears unless it was imperative for the show ring. If you are going to breed your dog and her ears are a little erratic, make sure to put her together with a male who has perfectly upright ears. That way you will balance out and hopefully most of the puppies will have upright ears. This is the general thought when breeding; what your dog lacks the other should have, and if yours had strong characteristics and the other does as well, it should be a good breeding. Cropping her ears will not change the way her puppies turn out.
