Boston Terrier Diet

by Kala
(Fairmont)

Hello. I rescued my Boston about 5 months ago and we are having problems finding a food that she is not allergic to. She keeps breaking out in a rash on her tummy and chewing at her paws on every food we have tried. I know that Bostons are notorious for being allergic to wheat, soy, and other carbohydrates. We have been to the vet several times and been on steroids twice. Does any one else have this issue? What food are you using? Is there any topical treatments I can give my baby to keep her from itching?

Thank you in advance!!

Food Allergies

I use Van Patten's Duck and Potato, we add green beans and fish oil to it.

It takes about 1 1/2 to 2 months for full effect.

Don't cheat. Keep the protein source isolated while you conduct experiments.

No Milk Bones.

Read about allergies.

Brand of food

We have just brought home a new BT puppy! We have 3 others, so now have quite a herd. We have been having alot of luck with Purina Proplan's Select turkey and barley formula. Two of our guys have some issues with alot of other foods, so we're sticking to this. We're big on reading labels, so do check the bags for your own info, but there's no corn, turkey by-products, ect. Also has alot of the things the more "holistic" brands say they have. So far, it's worked great for us!

Suggestions to Switch to
by: Anonymous

Does your food contain Corn Gluten Meal, any corn products and/or byproducts? Or even brewers rice?

If it contains any of the above...SWITCH immediately. Dogs typically develop allergies (mostly skin related) to Corn Gluten Meal.

Castor and Pollux Organix, Natural Balance, or Blue Buffalo are the only three I'd ever feed my dog. Corn is also VERY difficult for your dog to digest.

Hope this helps & that your dog feels better! :)

I would talk to my vet about trying to find the real culprit for the allergic reaction. Once when I had a puppy with an upset digestive system, we withheld food for, say, 24 hours and then started him in on a bland diet. There is a Science Diet prescription diet for that. Not sure if that's a direction you NEED to go in, but it might be a place to start. Once you find a diet he can manage without the itching, you'll all be a lot happier. Good luck.

it's so hard to find a good food. in the meantime, benadryl can help with the itching until you can find a good food. i belong to a group that feeds raw. this might be a way to go.
hope this helps...
