Pure-bred dogs tend to have many more health issues than their lovable "mutt" counterparts due to the level of in-breeding inherent in keeping a breed pure. These include heart, eye, hearing, joint, and cancer problems. To help minimize this effect good breeders do two things. First they make sure that both parents are healthy and come from healthy lines. Some even do genetic tests, but these are expensive. The other important step is avoiding-inbreeding between related animals. In-breeding causes rare diseases that would otherwise be "masked" by a mixing of different genetic lines to show up and result in sicker dogs. You would be doing the Boston Terrier breed a service to find a male who is healthy, comes from healthy parents, and is not related to your baby.

Line Breeding

Line Breeding is done but by experienced breeders and with tested champions. Here's the reason...both pups display no "bad genes" but carry them. (a recessive gene). When they get together this "recessive gene" can now become dominant and "show".

When you first begin to breed you should check out the pedigrees and try to get them as distant as possible. Also, see if you can get the information on each dog listed in the pedigree to make sure that no "problems" existed.

You are looking for problems with the eyes, legs, heart, organs...I think you get the idea.
