Boston Pattern?

We have recently become a Boston owner. We bought Zukie when he was 7 weeks old. I loved him from the first picture I saw of him :) The seller was not the breeder, she was selling them for a friend as she had a facility to house the dogs (she ran a doggy day care). I was unable to see the parents but was told that the mom was 13 lbs and the dad was 17 lbs.

The breeder use to sell the dogs as AKC but had run into much trouble with buyers? So they no longer registered their litters. Zukie was the last male but there were 3 sisters left. 2 sisters looked exactly like the traditional BT. Zukie is b&w but his pattern is not standard. As you can see by the picture. I have seen very few pictures of BT with non-traditional markings. My vet seems to believe he is pure bred. And actually it really doesn't matter now, we've had him 3 1/2 months and love him LOTS!

Would Zukie be frowned upon in the official BT world? He also has slight brindle in his hips when the sun catches it just right. Love your site, great resource for a new boston mom. How did I ever live without a BT?!?!?
Thanks, Becky

Careful Where You get Your Boston
by: Anonymous

It is extremely important that a Boston that is overly marked with white not be bred as the white factor is a predisposition for deafness. I will add here that The Boston Terrier Club of America has rigorous standards for health in breeding Bostons. To make this as short as possible, it is extremely important that anyone who is interested in acquiring a Boston look for a breeder who has tested the parents for deafness, luxating patellas, juvenile cataracts, cardiac problems and breathing problems. Anyone with two dogs can be a breeder, but a person who is truly devoted to the betterment of the breed will only breed dogs that are healthy, from healthy breed lines and have been certified healthy by a professional testing.

Pet store Bostons are not usually healthy, nor have they been bred by responsible breeders. Anyone who truly loves the breed will do what is necessary to produce healthy dogs that are a positive addition to the gene pool and not be breeding to produce a benefit to their wallets! Not only will this produce a wonderful companion of great beauty but a healthy companion.

BT with the same markings
by: Leisa

I also have a BT, Emma, who's got the same markings. I was told by someone at a pet store that she wasn't a BT because she didn't have the traditional markings and that's what I feel in love with. My other BT, Jack, has the traditional markings. I have papers for both, well, will as soon as I turn Emma's registeration in. lol

Bostons are bundles of love
by: Sandra

My breeder told me when I got my first boston from her 8 years ago, that God ran out of paint with my little boston, who is also mis-marked like your cutie. I now have 4 bostons all from the same breeder. I will always have a boston. They are wonderful bundles of love in black and white packages.

Yes, Zukie looks like he is all Boston

Look all over the internet for Boston pictures and videos on you tube and myspace. You will see all kinds of markings. Some even have all white faces. As you have found already it doesn't matter if their markings aren't perfect breed standard, they have all the other Boston qualities. By the way, Zukie looks adorable.

The Face
by: Anonymous

I have a boston (Howie) who has a nearly identical face....I think it gives him a "special" look. He is as adorable as any other Boston. I saw his picture when he was still nursing on the internet and fell in love with him. No one has ever said he didn't look like a Boston, because it is how Bostons act that make people adore them. Good Luck!
