Boston Eating Feces

by Kim E. Fulton

I recently adopted a 9 week old Boston (now almost 12 weeks) and he is an absolute joy! My daughter and son-in-law have one and I took care of him for 5 days while they vacationed and after that it was all over. This dog had more personality than most people I know and the love he bestowed upon me was almost overwhelming! I was never going to get a pet again (it's been 20 years?) but before I knew it I was moving to a pet friendly apt. complex and getting a Boston of my very own!!!

My problem is one that I guess is not unheard of but a real problem nonetheless and that is he eats his feces (yuck). He has done so since I got him and I can divert him away while I pick it up when we're outside but when he has to go on paper when I'm out he eats it and last night it made him sick. What do I do?

poo eating pup

I have had this problem with my Boston as well, she eventually became so aggressive about it that she would eat not only her feces but both the stools from our to Boxers but also the wild rabbits that live under our deck. I asked my vet what to do and she suggested powders and tablets to put in her food. Unfortunately this only increased her desire for the other dogs' stools. The vet then told me that I would have to take her out on a leash every time she goes outside to make sure that she doesn't eat any feces. It takes a long time because it is a very hard habit to break, but it does work. Now Betsy rarely eats feces and I no longer have to accompany her with a leash outside. When she is tempted by fresh stool, I tell her to "leave it" like dog trainer Victoria Stillwell says to do. I have found that this seems to work.

pinapple and adolphs meat tenderizer works. just add a tablespoon of crushed pineapple to the dogs food or sprinkle the adolphs on top of the food.

My 8 mth. BT does it too and it is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen! I have tried switching her food, etc. and nothing seems to help! Hopefully she grows out of it.

Eating feces

I know you wrote this a while ago but I just read it. Your pup may have out grown this habit already. The one way to break the habit is to feed him a couple pieces of pineapple a day. For some reason it makes the poop taste disgusting and he will longer eat it. After you can maintain with just a couple pieces every couple of days.
I hope you already solved the problem but if not give it a try!

Little Poop Eater : )

disgusting but normal. They will it it if the food is not completely digested I suggest switching brands of food something that is easier for your puppy to digest for ex: lamb and rice mix. Hopes this helps, it has worked for me.

Good Luck with your Pup
