Best way to keep a Boston home for 7-8 hours alone.

We are planning to get a puppy (hopefully a Boston!) towards the end of this summer while we are visiting my grandpa. We will return to our own house in about a month. Since we will not be at our house, where the Boston will regularly live, we will not be able to get into a daily routine with the dog until we return home (1 month). In which we will return to our own house, I will return to school and my dad will return to work instantly. Hoping we will be able to crate train, potty train, ect. the dog while at my grandpa's.

What will be the best way for us to leave the dog home alone during the day? (I will leave for school at about 7:30 am and will get back home at about 3:30 pm)
We live in a regular house with a good size yard where 90 percent of it is already fenced off.
How does this plan sound?
The sooner the better since we should be getting it in about a month!!!
NO SUGGESTIONS ARE TO BE TOOK FOR GRANTED, ANYTHING HELPS!!!JUST FOR THE BEST FOR THE DOG!
THANKS LOADS IN ADVANCE!!!!

Doggy Door is a Must
by: Kasie

I have a doggy door that my Beaumont uses as he pleases. I keep plenty of water in his bowl. It's the kind with the large bottle that refills as it empties. He is more than okay with being alone during the day with our beagle.

Do not trust your fence to keep your dog in because a Boston Terrier can clear a 5 foot fence pretty easily if they want to. I have a Bugg and I had to extend my gate up to 7 feet to keep her from scaling it. So if you leave your Boston in the yard while you are away it may just decide to go over the fence and try to find you........... they like to be with their people and hate to be left behind.
If you leave her for that long I would just leave her in the house with her toys or crate her if she is in that destructive puppy stage.

Doggie Door
by: Kathleen

We also live in TX, and it's definitely too hot for them to be outside. We have an air-conditioned portion of the house (mudroom) that has doggie door access to the outdoors and a little room for them to roam inside - this is also where we keep their water. That way they can go outside as needed and still be comfortable inside. Fortunately, we were able to set this up where there's nothing for them to get into. I can't allow them full access to the house while we're gone, as our female chews up everything!

Home Alone!

Oh No!
Home Alone!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

A Boston Terrier doesn't do that great outdoors. We live in Texas and it is hot here. I don't know where you live, but if it is in the United States, it still gets too hot in the summer.

It sounds like you should probably crate-train your puppy. You can keep them indoors that way and they usually like the crate. We have 4 bostons and they all like it. One LOVES her crate, two like it for resting, and one will go in there but LOVES to come out whenever anyone is home.

There is loads of information online about crate-training and also in many dog-owner books. We have a book on Boston Terriers that I love (can't remember the author right now).
