Are Boston Terriers For Working People?

by Ron

Hi,

I am a single father with 7 and 10 year old daughters. We also have a 11 year old cat. I want to rescue an adult Boston. I am willing to put in the time before and after work (9-5 job) and have an after school babysitter willing to help. Would an adult Boston be okay in this situation or would this be unfair to the dog? Thank you.

Ron

Getting a new member of the family is a big decision. It is nice to see that you are thinking it through.

We all work or go to school at my house and we have 3 Bostons. Our Bostons are very healthy and happy. Our vet says they are well taken care of. We have to leave them alone from about 7 am to 3pm.

It would be better for you to get the adult versus a puppy because all the training (hopefully) is mostly complete. Plus he might be somewhat settled down.

Of course it all depends on the dog's personality. We get up at around 5am and make sure the dogs have eaten and gone potty. Then when we come home they go potty again and have free reign in the house. Our dogs do have each other, but would probably be ok alone until we get home. There are some dogs that have separation anxiety. This type of dog would not be so happy and would be better in a house where someone is home at all times.

Visit with the dog and speak with the rescue person to see what his personality is like. Then decide if he is a good fit.
