Any ideas on aggression with cats?

We just adopted a 2-3 yr old male Boston from a local shelter about a week ago, he is everything we were hoping for. He is potty trained, loves our 5 yr old son, our Chihuahuas, listens and minds wonderfully! There is one exception though..the cat. "Banjo"the Boston, stares with serious intent at the cat and every chance he gets, he chases and does not hear us WHAT SO EVER! I am afraid he will catch her at some point.
Has anyone else had this problem and can it be resolved possibley?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Boston terrier mix and cat aggression
by: sylvia

My veterinarian said when I mentioned how aggressive my boston terrier mix is with cats: "Desensitize, desensitize and desensitize!!" Not easy but after a period of time the Boston has become used to the cat. However, when a new cat came in we had to start all over again. I, too, use vinegar & water spray bottle. Helps. good luck.

How is the Boston viewing the cat?
by: Joe

I guess it depends on how the Boston is viewing the cat? Is it viewing it as a toy that it can get to run and chase it, or is it aggressive towards it?

Neither of our Bostons were ever aggressive towards our cat, but LOVED to play the predator/prey game with her, where they'd get her to run just so they could tackle her and playfully bite at her. Neither ever hurt her though, and she tolerated it, and would give them a good swat (claws in) if she had enough.

Sadly, our cat went up missing about a year ago. I'm not sure if she was killed, or if she just had enough of wrestling with our two Bostons all of the time. lol

Boston and cats
by: cheryl lucius

I have had the same problem. We braught the cat in the same room and every time ower dog made a noise at her we would tell her no and snap ower fingers to get her to look away from the cat. When she would look away from the cat we would give her a treat. If she still barked at the cat we would put her in her cage. But after a few hours she figured it out that the cat was not a toy. Just reward the Boston for good behaver they are very smart dogs and love peanut butter in there chew toys.

help with cats

Does your cat hae claws? My 4 month old Boston has gotten to the same size as the cat whom i hae had for 10 years. Although they sleep together at night, my Boston tackles the cat every chance she gets. I am waiting to find out if the cat will strike back. I have a bottle with water, vinegar and tabasco in the wings and I use this when the Boston misbehaves. Doesn;t hurt her but gets the point across. Good luck
