Anal Gland Removal

My 3 yr. old male Boston Terrier has chronic anal gland infection presenting with exterier draining opening on either side of anal opening. He has been through three sets of strong antibiotic treatment with continuing draining.
My question. Is anal gland removal a safe viable option? Side effects? Lasting side effects of such surgery?
