Allergies & Prednisone

The only treatment that works for my Boston's allergies is prednisone. Does anyone have a BT that has been on prednisone long-term? If so - what are the side effects.

Thanks. Margaret

HELP FOR ALLERGIES
by: SHERIDAN SMITH

So far we have been very lucky with our "Boggle" she seems to have no allergies..YET!
But one of our French Bulldogs has numerous allergies. We needed to experiment with what we fed him and discovered that he has problems with both beef and cheese. His symptom are itchy skin and actually gets a bumpy rash especially under his "arm/leg" pits.
Our vet didn't want to keep him on the prednisone any longereven thought it did seem to help him. Supposedly this can be hard on some of their organs.

Anyway, we have put him on "Atopica" which has really calmed his itch down. Yourvet would havethat available.....but we have purchased ours on 1-800-Petmeds. Our vet must still approve this for us as it is only given via prescription. After using the Atopica for awhile....the manufacturers came out with a generic form called "Cyclosporine". This has proven to work just as well.....but it costs alot less.

When he has an outbreak, we give him the medicine "once every three days" and after it starts to clear up, we are able to revert to once a week. Hot weather can set him off....so when the weather gets cooler, we are sometimes able to stop it completely for awhile. This medicine has proven to keep him comfortable, you just need to play around with the dosage to find out what works for your pet.

Our vet keeps an eye on his general condition and is happy with how our "boy" has responded to the Generic form of the drug. He really wanted to get him away from the prednisone. It seems like the allergies can never be "cured" we just have to learn to help him live with it.

If you go online to 1-800-Petmeds...you will be able to read the reviews from others for these drugs. There are many customers for this item. I am sure there may be other web-sites out there to purchase this but these guys seem to be the best.

Good luck with your "baby".....we know they must be really suffering when they itch all the time.
We suffer just watching them.
