9 YO Boston Terrier with no energy and shakes

(Baton Rouge)

We have a 9 year old female who hardly wants to do anything anymore. About 2 years ago she started getting very lazy and wanting to sleep all the time and we brought her to the vet and they said she was fine, no problems. She continued on just being lazy and sleeping all the time. Last year we brought her to a diff vet and she said her thyroid levels were low so we put her in prescription thyroid medicine which made her lose weight and she still is sleepy. We brought her to a 3rd vet last week and they did xrays and blood work and she is healthy they say. Do you guys have any suggestions? She sleep alot, shakes sometimes for no reason and has no energy.

Brain Tumor

My dog had a brain tumor and every vet said he was fine until I demanded a brain scan. Brain tumors are common in BT. I treated mine with Radiation and he is like a new boy!

Our 1 1/2 year old Boston terrier had same symptoms and was diagnosed with Addison disease. Can lead a normal life but needs medication everyday.

Well we just found out that our dog (mentioned above) has cushings disease and we are going to try and treat her for it.

To EVERYONE who has a "shaking" dog,
it's PAIN! It may be stomach pain or
other, maybe arthritis. Dogs like these get
pains around 8-10. That's a senior problem.
First treat that.

SECOND...sleeping a lot, nipping, groaning,
not wanting to walk, move, etc., that's ALSO PAIN.
Please do not ignore..no..it's not lazy!

It sounds like your dog used to be more active.
Some dogs are not very active...which is not the typical behavior for Bostons...they are usually very active so I understand your concern.

We have 3 Bostons...one is Playful, the other one is Lap-Dogish, and the third I call Hyperexcitabilitoid. Yours has probably become somewhat like my Lap-Dog. She became "lazy" around 3 years old. I call her my old-lady. She's very healthy, though. She doesn't eat as much as the other two either, but that is not a concern.

Your pup's shaking is somewhat of a concern. It could be a type of "nervous" reaction, though. My friend has a Boston that shakes when you want her to do something that she doesn't want to do (like go potty outside when it's cold). So you may want to try to see what it is that makes her shake.

If the vets all say that she is ok, then it may just be her personality. If you have more than one dog in your house, she may be displaying some sort of "canine" behavior (like a pecking order). Keep a very close watch on her and see how much she eats, if she vomits, and if her stools are firm. If all else is well, then just try playing with her in a gentle manner with maybe a stuffed animal. Find out what she likes and use that to stimulate her.
