8 year old BT potty training

Hello, we just adopted a BT from a family who could no longer care for her. We all love her and she gets along wonderful with our big family of children and other pets, but she is pottiyng all over My house! The Previous owners said they had issues with this as well. We want to keep her but I would like my carpet to stay clean as well. Can you train a dog this old to potty outside or is it true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Thank you in advance for any help on this matter.

Potty training
by: Debbie

Hi, I am a firm believer in crate training. The only thing i will add to all the wonderful advice given already, is that out is for potty, waling only until she gets it. not playing. after she does her business, lots of praise and inside for play. Good luck Debbie

I agree with Laurel. You must use a crate, but make sure it is not so large that she can go in one corner and sleep in another where it is dry. Limit her water when she's in the kennel until you are sure she is more trustworthy. When you take her out of the kennel, pick her up, do not let her walk to the door, and take her outside immediately, either to her potty pen or on leash. Use consistent commands ? we usually say "pee-out" or "poop-out" ? because she does know where "out" is, most likely. Say it constantly, while you are taking her to the door and out.

Then once she relieves herself, "say, "good pee-out" or whatever, lots of praise, and "in for a treat." Then take her right back in and give her a treat, telling her how good she was to "pee-out."
I had a bloodhound puppy who peed in her crate; I had to take the blanket out [for a week or so], so she had to lie down on the metal bottom, but she never peed in the crate again, even once we put the blanket back in. That might be a solution if your girl does. We just rescued a Boston, and she has an occasional piddle accident, but never in her crate because it is the right size for her. She did pee in her crate when she lived with her previous owner. Most of the time, her mistakes have been ours because we weren't paying attention to her signs. Good luck!

Potty Issues
by: Laurel

I don't see why not, I would start with putting her in a Kennel when your not home and at night and when you let her out you immediately put her outside and she does not come in until she does the deed outside then praise her or reward with a treat. When she goes inside scold her then put her outside. I find that I like leave my Bugg outside for about 30 min this gives lots of time to pick a spot and to run around. It may take awhile but be consistent and do not loose your temper with her the calmer and more assertive you are the better.

If you find that she pees in her kennel over night or when your out she may have a medical problem but it is more likely that no one constantly trained her.
