5 year old Boston with a cataract

Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this site! I just took Merlin to the vet and commented that in some lights I think I see a bluish cloudiness in the back of his right eye. She looked and confirmed it does look like he has a cataract, I am waiting on the referral to the eye doctor. There may also be a problem with the left eye (the ocular disk is a beigeish colour when normally it is a pink salmon). In preparation for anything I am looking for any information on cataract surgery. He turns 5 next month, is in perfect health otherwise, and doesn't appear to be in any pain, or even noticing a decreased amount of vision in that eye. Any suggestions you have would be very much welcome!

Boston terrier eye problem.
by: Matthew D

I just noticed my boston which is 10 years old has a blue like cloud staring to form on the back of his right eye. Don't see the same on his left. He's in great health and his right eye doesnt seem to bother him at all. Could this be a cataract starting to form? If so, what should I be looking for in the near future? Thanks in advance for any help someone can give me. Yours truly, Matthew D.

Seeing Pups

4 week old puppies should be able to see. Have they begun to walk yet? Are they playing with each other? Evidently their eyes have opened, was it at the usual 8-10 days? If they are walking around and playing with their littermates I am sure they can see pretty well.

It would be pretty rare to have the entire litter born blind. You do not have to rush to the vet but on your next scheduled visit be sure to address your concerns. I am sure the vet would be very happy to check out their eyes in detail.

Congratulations, by the way!

cataract surgery

Hi! Since Merlin is very young, my advice is to have a specialist look at him. Just want you to know that it will be very expensive - the visit itself and future procedures. My advice is to consider fixing one eye at a time because you can end up losing both of Merlin's eyes. It's more expensive to do one eye at a time but it will be worth it. I say this because Boston's have unique difficulties when going through eye surgeries for cataracts. There can be interocular pressure build up and drains will have to be put in. There's only a few places that can perform placing the drains. Lots of times you can lose the eye. So, if this happens at least he will have one eye to see with. I don't want to scare you but really think about it. Good luck! Don't wait until he gets older.
