5 mo. BT not eating Food... trying to decide what food to try next...

My 5 month old BT, Easton, slowly lost interest in his dinner over a couple of days (where he would just eat a little here, then a little there), which is totally opposite of how he used to be (he use to run to the food mat when I asked if he was "hungry" and tremble in excitement)! I feed him 3/4c of Blue Buffalo Chicken & Rice for Puppy. His attitude is fine, his stools are solid too. After a few days of him picking at his food, I added some water to moisten it, that worked for about two days, then he lost interest again. Since he was getting neutered later in the week, I wanted to make sure he had his strength so I added some can food with the Blue Buffalo kibble, he has been eating it just fine for the past three days, until this morning when he only ate half.

Here's the kicker, he is interested in our other dogs' food: Blue Buffalo Chicken & Oatmeal for adults. He will eat his own Puppy food as 'treats' or rewards during training... just not during 'breakfast or dinner time'. This makes me believe he doesn't dislike chicken as the protein and it also makes me think that he doesn't completely dislike his food if he still obeys commands for it. He also has some real smelly & frequent gas... I know BT's are gassy, but this seems a little exceptional.

I am willing to switch foods, just not sure to what... Wellness for Puppies? That seems to have identical ingredients. I would like to stay with the corn-free foods. I have also considered some 'grain-free' but there doesn't seem to be any true 'puppy' formulas so I would prefer not to use that food until after he is 1 year old. A raw food diet wouldn't be too practical for us either.

Has anyone else been through this?! Or even with the exceptional gas? What ingredients did you discover that reduced the stinkiness of the gas? Thanks!

Nutro Natural Choice is my pick
by: Heather

I have two boston terrier puppies ages 4 months and 7 1/2 months. We were putting them on a limited fancy dry dog food but it kept giving them loose stools. Finally we tried Nutro Natural Choice Small Breed Puppy after going to the pet store and it has worked wonders! They use all natural ingredients but it is not so high in protein as some of the others which helps with the loose stools. Also they have little to no gas! You can check up and read reviews on it but this food has worked wonders for our boston terriers.

Puppy food

Our puppies ate the same puppy food you use. The gas was about the same too until they turned one years old. At that time we switched to the Blue Buffalo Fish and sweet potato. I think corn is the worst for gas. Also I add the NuVet vitamins to their food and one capsule of FISH OIL and a tsp of plain non-fat yogurt. Now they still have gas but not near as often and it's not near as skin-grafting deadly.

Also, when you feed your pup measure it. It should be somewhere around 1/2 cup a day to 1 cup a day. If she refuses just put it away for a while. If you have to go to work then just go. When you come home she will probably be hungry.

We have a female that is a strange eater. She will not eat when the others are eating. Only when they are finished. I just put hers up on the counter and when they are done I put her in my room by herself while I get ready and she eats. When she doesn't want to eat in the morning I put it away and give it to her when we come home from work. She usually eats right away...sometimes she waits until after dinner.

I feed our other two twice a day and most of the time she eats twice a day but sometimes only once. I give the other two 3/4 cups twice a day and her only 1/2 cup twice a day. She just doesn't eat as much as they do. It's funny because she is a little "fatter" than they are but she is also shorter.

Guess what I am saying is try to feed your puppy a little less at each feeding and see if that helps. Also, the more you change their food the more finicky they become.

Food Issues
by: Jen

I just had to switch from California Natural to Old Roy's food. The California Natural is recommeded by vets and it worked for a 7 months and then it started making my Boston, Moose, have loose stools. He also had awful gas when he was on this. I switched to a regular brand that I get from the general supermarket and he rarely has gas and has been much more excited about eating.
